Champion sommelier to debut his Element wines

Bates holds aloft the sommelier trophy.
ARKPORT -- What may be New York's newest wines will be on sale in time for the holidays, if the go-getters behind Element Winery have their way.

The young Finger Lakes operation has just had its final design bottle labels completed for its  Reisling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet Franc wines.

Getting shelf space in a market crowded with many New York and other wines isn't exactly an easy task, but Christopher P. Bates knows a thing or two about being competitive.

Bates, 31, co-owner of the winery as well as being general manager and executive chef at the historic Hotel Fauchere in Milford, PA, won the 6th International Young Sommeliers Competition, held in Cape Town, South Africa, last month. The contest was sponsored by the gastronomic society International Confrerie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs.

The Cornell University graduate also holds Advanced Sommelier Certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers and is a candidate for Masters Designation. He is a member of the Society of Wine Educators, and has earned Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW), Certified Wine Educator (CWE) and Certified Spirit Specialist (CSS) titles.

Bates and his father, Bob, operate the winery which is projected to produce about 1,000 cases per year, which will be primarily available online and at restaurants.

Element Winery is located at 9790 Oak Hill Road in this Steuben County community, located near Hornell. Phone: (607) 295-7380.
