|The Ugly Rooster Cafe|
The man behind it -- chef-owner Ariel Pagano -- had loads of experience and good reviews to his credit, and the venture has been working. Curiously, though, it has taken until now for one iconic comfort dish to be added to the menu.
As announced on the restaurant's Facebook page today, "Meatloaf is now on our Saturday night dinner menu!"
That announcement actually is, in a sense, twofold. The restaurant has made its mark serving breakfast and lunch (hours 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends) but recently quietly added Saturday night dinner service, from 4 to 7 p.m. That will go on until late February, according to Pagano.
He is serving such dishes as chicken and biscuits ($11), Cajun catfish ($12), beef short ribs ($16), chicken and shrimp pesto ($13) -- and meat loaf!
The Ugly Rooster is located at 159 North Main Street (at Saratoga Avenue) in this Saratoga County community, a spot previously inhabited for years by a grocery store before making way for Matteo’s Trattoria and Penny’s Main Street Café.
Pagan got his training working at such places as the Glen Sanders Mansion in Scotia and Longfellows in Saratoga Springs, and worked with William Hohenstein when that worthy fellow was the founding chef at the Latham Circle Diner. Hohenstein is a partner in the Ugly Rooster.
Pagan, who once owned a pizzeria, also is a noted pastry chef whose creations are temptingly displayed in a refrigerated case, diner style.
The everyday menu includes a full range of breakfast dishes and lunch offerings ranging from Tex-Mex-style items to specialty burgers, burritos, deli sandwiches, salads and the like. You can find the menu here. Phone: 664-2769.
