Mapleing, rite of winter, open to the public

The weather may have been erratic for the past few winters, but one thing that has remained predictable is the sugar mapleing season.

The Upper Hudson Maple Producers Association is taking advantage of that to hold its annual Maple Open House Weekend, this year set for two sessions -- March 16-17 and 23-24 -- at 19 venues stretching over several six New York counties and one Massachusetts site.

Among activities will be tree-tapping demonstrations; sap boiling for syrup creation; sampling of maple sugars, syrups and candies, plus demonstrations of the use of both traditional and state of the art mapleing systems.

New York is the third largest maple producing state in the nation.
