Update: Damaged Lake George steakhouse still not open

UPDATE (6/16/14): George's Steak House still has not begun rebuilding after an April fire that delayed its planned seasonal opening and effectively may wind up making them miss the Lake George season. The latest word from the restaurant's Facebook page said it has not yet received town approvals for the work.

LAKE GEORGE -- Today was supposed to be opening day for the seasonal steakhouse George's Restaurant. Instead, the owners are in the process of cleaning up fire damage.

Firefighters were called to the East Shore Drive restaurant shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday. Investigators said they do not yet know the origin of the fire, although they suspect it started in a small shed that separates the restaurant from a house on the rear of the property. While that building was destroyed, damage to the restaurant was confined to the kitchen. No injuries were reported.

In a Facebook posting, the restaurant's management said, "Thank you everyone for your early support during this difficult time. A huge thanks to the emergency responders who did a fabulous job ...

"As of today, we still do not know the cause of the fire, however it was extensive enough to cause damage to our kitchen to prevent us from opening as scheduled. We will know more as [the] damage evaluation process concludes, but our plan remains to open this season. The timeline will be determined and we will keep you all posted."

The Adirondack-style facility has been in operation for 20 years. It is located at 3857 Route 9L, on the east side of the lake. Phone: 668-5482.
