Bulletin: Spirits pairing dinner sighting reported

Last weekend, during a private spirits tasting dinner I was asked to host in Rensselaer County, several attendees noted they were there because they were tired of wine tasting dinners. (I'm sure I also was part of the attraction. They didn't say so, but that probably was merely an oversight.)

I understand the frustration. Commercially, it is true there rarely are spirits-pairing dinners in the Capital Region. That's what makes an upcoming event at Mio Vino Wine Bar & Bistro in Altamont so interesting.

Mini-cocktails will be paired with an ambitious eight-course meal, priced at a reasonable $75 per person, plus tax and tip. The event begins at 6 p.m. Sunday, October 26. Reservations may be made by calling 595-5095. Mio Vino is located at 186 Main Street.

The menu:
First Course 
Lobster cocktail with lemon, tarragon and extra virgin olive oil over Boston bibb lettuce
Mini Lillet Twist: Tanqueray, Lillet, Triple Sec and lemon juice

Intermezzo 
Lime sorbet infused with Boodles London Dry Gin

Second Course 
Cucumber, celery, tomato, onion salad with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar
Mini Prairie Cucumber Vodka martini

Third Course 
Creamy orzo risotto with Meyer lemon and wild mushrooms
Mini Hangar One Citron lemon drop martini

Fourth Course 
Trout meuniere amandine with brown butter and almonds
Amaretto Disaronno

Fifth Course 
Pollo relleno -- chicken breast stuffed with manchego cheese, mushrooms and spinach
Chilled Patron AƱejo

Sixth Course
Spiedies -- Tangy pork kebabs, dried herbs, vinegar on Italian hoagie roll
Mini-Manhattan with Maker's Mark, Aixa vino vermouth, Angostura bitters and a maraschino cherry

Seventh Course
Crusted Hereford filet with black peppercorn crust with a mashed potato dollop
Remy Martin VSOP Cognac

Eighth Course 
Mini cannoli
Mini-chocolate martini: Godiva, Stoli Vanilla and Bailey's
