City trio comes up big in 'Pickle-d' food fight

ALBANY -- Three city restaurants were in a pickle Saturday, and were happy about it. That's because each of them picked up two awards in the Albany Downtown BID's "Food Fight: Pickle(d) Edition" pickled foods competition.

The judges' awards:

-- "You are the Bread to My Butter Pickle Award” (Best Use of a Cucumber Pickle): Chef Steve Kerzner of DP: An American Brasserie/Yono’s for crispy pickled croquette.

-- “Your Downtown Dill is a Thrill Award” (Best Use of a Pickled Ingredient): Chef James Frese of Ama Cocina for spicy pickled golden beets.

-- "You Can Pickle That Award” (Most Creative Use of a Pickle or Pickle/d Ingredient): tie between chef Anthony Verni of Charter (Hilton) for goat cheese pana cotta with pickled beets and pistachio, and chef Larry Schepici of Jack’s Oyster House's for veal osso bucco pierogi with pickled veal tongue, pickled root vegetables, and braised veal sauce.

The Spear-It Awards (People’s Choices) selections were DP: An American Brasserie/Yono’s, Ama Cocina (tie), The Capital American Eatery & Lounge, and Jack’s Oyster House.
