Public House 42 romps in Troy Chowderfest judging

TROY -- A newcomer to the Troy Chowderfest competition topped a field of 25 entries Sunday to win the judges' top award in the 9th annual event.

Public House 42, which recently opened at 42 Eagle Street in Albany - adjacent to the under-construction convention center near the Governor's Mansion, won for its smoked corn, crab, chipotle chowder. The same concoction also was scored as most original and best seafood chowder, a great trifecta for a fledgling operation.

(Full disclosure: As has been the case for every Chowderfest, I was one of the judges. Public House 42 received my vote in all categories.)

Overall, 19 food purveyors created 25 different chowders for the event.

In second place was Bountiful Bread of Guilderland's creamy salmon chowder with pancetta, and third place went to Russo's of Amsterdam for its seafood bisque. The Ruck, a Troy gastropub, saw its spicy corn and kale chowder win best vegetarian, and B-Rad's Bistro of Troy won the people's choice vote for its roasted garlic, honey and bacon chowder. City Line Bar & Grill of Albany won the best booth vote.
