A new restaurant debuts at a new Schenectady hotel

Inside the new DoubleTree
SCHENECTADY -- It happened five months later than the originally-announced estimate, but the city's newest downtown restaurant, Sammy’s Burgers and Bistro, officially opened today. Oh, and by the way, it is surrounded by a new hotel.

Sammy's, part of the new 120-room DoubleTree by Hilton at 100 Nott Street, features a wide-ranging menu that includes such sandwiches as Sammy’s Special -- a burger blended with brisket, chuck and porterhouse steak and topped with American cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce, pickles and bistro sauce -- and such entrees as salmon la plancha -- salmon served over spinach garlic and finished with lemon butter and caper white wine sauce. The beverage menu includes a variety of craft beers and craft cocktails.

In addition to dinner, the kitchen offers the Wake Up DoubleTree Breakfast service as well as room service.

In its opening-day announcement, management said, "Our dishes are influenced by the Capital District and surrounding region, showcasing our passion for local and delicious food. Transform the way you feel about hotel dining. Our chefs customize and create the menus, ensuring that you'll enjoy top-quality cuisine and an extraordinary dining experience."

The new hotel, which emerged from a former Holiday Inn as part of a $13 million reconstruction project, is the culmination of a makeover that includes the addition of a new commercial building featuring a lobby, the restaurant, a bar, meeting space, pool and exercise facility. It is owned and managed by Schahet Hotels. The same company also owns the Hampton Inn & Suites near the Proctors theater complex.

Sammy's hours: 5 to 11 p.m. daily. Phone: 393-4141.
