Blue Ribbon Diner co-founder dead at 89

SCHENECTADY -- Calling hours were scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Daly Funeral Home for Angelo "Jimmy" Menagias, co-founder of the popular Blue Ribbon Restaurant. Menagias died Saturday at the age of 89.

Menagias, a native of Greece, arrived in Schenectady in 1926 and got work as a dishwasher. He was employed at the James Restaurant and at Newest Lunch before opening Broadway Lunch, and in 1977 opened the Blue Ribbon Restaurant with family members. The restaurant, now called the Blue Ribbon Restaurant & Bakery, is located at 1801 State Street. It remains under family ownership.

After he retired, Menagias divided his time between Florida and Greece with his wife, Anna. He became ill in Florida pulmonary fibrosis, which led to his death.
