New restaurant at senior facility open to the public

WATERVLIET -- Chef Steven Campbell is heading the kitchen at an unusual public venue -- in a senior assisted-living facility.

The Restaurant at the Pointe, located at One Bell Tower Drive in the Shaker Pointe at Carondelet faciity, is believed to be the first such venture in the Northeast, or perhaps the entire East Coast. It is open for lunch (11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) and dinner (5 to 8 p.m.) Tuesdays through Saturdays. Takeout service also is available.

It is housed in a round stone building the facility operators say "was designed to emulate the architecture of traditional Shakers."

Campbell graduated I n 2002 from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. Since then, he has had a varied career, including cooking turns in Pennsylvania and Vermont, deli ownership, and a decade with the Mazzone Hospitality group.

Before his present job, Campbell spent three years at the Holiday group as a senior executive chef for both Holiday at the Atrium in Scotia and Diamond Ridge in Troy. His menu at the Pointe focuses on comfort foods, salads, and pizzas.
