'Wines of Washington County' free tasting on Saturday

Here's something you don't see touted very often: "The Wines of Washington County." That's the title of a free tasting event set for 2 to 6 p.m. this Saturday at the Greenwich Free Library.

Representatives from three local wineries will be on hand with free samples of their products and will be available to discuss the industry and their particular venues. Wine also may be purchased by the glass or bottle.

The featured vineyards are Natural Selection Farm Winery, 85 Darwin Road, Cambridge; Northern Cross Vineyard, 1106 Beadle Hill Road, Valley Falls, and Victory View Vineyard, 11975 NYS Route 40, Schagticoke.

Josh London of Verity Wine Partners will be on hand to speak about purchasing wine. Andy Weber of Northern Cross will talk about growing grapes in the region. Gerry Barnhart of Victory View, who also is president of the Upper Hudson Valley Wine Trail, will speak on the art and science of wine making.

The library is located at 148 Main Street in Greenwich. Phone: 692-7157.

The Upper Hudson trail, which meanders through several counties and has 12 member wineries and tasting rooms, offers an interactive plan-a-trip device on its website. Visitors simply drag-and-drop on a Google map the names of wineries from an accompanying list to begin the process, then simply click to have the locations appear on a map that can be printed out. The planner also provides turn-by-turn driving directions.
