SCCC culinary force Toby Strianese dies

Anthony "Toby" Strianese, an inspiration, guru, mentor, friend, and colleague to literally thousands of food professionals in the Capital Region, has died.

Strianese, 70, died Saturday. Calling hours are scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the  Church of St. Edward the Confessor, 569 Clifton Park Center Road, Clifton Park. The funeral will begin at the same location at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Strianese was the driving force behind Schenectady County Community College's renowned culinary program, being associated with it for more than four decades. He was dean of The School of Hotel, Culinary Arts & Tourism there from 1991 through 2008.

In addition to his teaching and administrative roles, Strianese and his wife Pamela Phillips Strianese co-authored a number of textbooks that have gone into multiple printings.
