Zatarain's, Mars Chocolate issuing product recalls

Two major food manufacturers have issued voluntary product recalls.

• Zatarain's has recalled 8-ounce boxes of its Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice Original with a "BEST BY" date of JUL 31 16Z, distributed in Eastern and Midwestern states. The packages may actually include its Creamy Parmesan Rice Mix which includes dairy ingredients.

Dairy allergens are not labeled on the Red Beans and Rice Original package, so people with a dairy allergy or sensitivity run the risk of a serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product, the company notes.

All retail outlets that sell these products are being notified to remove the product with affected date code from their shelves and warehouses immediately. Zatarain's announcement says, "This recall is being made with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration. The Company is also issuing an alert through the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network."

• Mars Chocolate North America has issued a voluntary allergy alert recall on its Dove Chocolate Assortment Snowflakes.

The assorted candies include undeclared peanuts, wheat, and egg ingredient. It is labeled  Item# 10139802 - UPC# 400050521 LOT CODE: 537CG4PA30, 537DG4PA30, 538AG4PA30, 538AM4PA30, 541AG4PA20, 542EM4PA20.

Approximately 6,700 cases of this item may contain some Snickers, Milky Way, and Twix pieces that contain peanuts, wheat and/or eggs, but these ingredients are not listed on the outer package ingredient label. People who have allergies to peanuts, wheat and/or eggs have the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
