NYS wines begin new year with a medal haul

New York State winemakers, fresh from a 2015 that saw them awarded literally hundreds of medals and titles in major competitions, didn't take long to begin cashing in for the new year.

In the just-completed San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, one of the most prestigious contests in the nation, New York State entries racked up three best-of-class awards, seven double golds (unanimous rating by the tasting panel), 19 Gold (majority rating by the panel), and an array of silver and bronze medals.

The biggest winners:

Best of Class: Black Willow Classic Diamond, Keuka Spring Vineyards 2014 Gewurztraminer, and Wagner Vineyards 2014 Riesling Caywood East Vineyard.

Double Gold: Keuka Spring's 2014 Riesling, 2014 Semi-Dry Riesling, and Apres; 1911 Spirits McIntosh Wine; Dr. Frank 2014 Semi-Dry Riesling; Rooster Hill 2014 Dry Riesling, and Wagner Vineyards 2014 Dry Riesling.

Gold: Black Willow's Black Cat Blush, DePeche Meow, Trilogy White, and Black Willow Berry; Chateau Lafayette Reneau 's2012 Cabernet Sauvgnon, 2013 Chardonnay, and 2014 Late Harvest Riesling; Belhurst's 2014 Chardonnay and 2013 Cabernet Franc; Dr. Frank's 2014 Gewurztraminer and 2014 Dry Riesling; 21 Brix Thirsty Elephant; Brooklyn Winery 2013 Finger Lakes Riesling; Buttonwood 2014 Chardonnay; Chateau Frank 2010 Blanc de Blanc; Knapp 2014 Dry Riesling; Kontokosta 2014 Orient Chardonnay; Lamoreaux Landing 2011 Chardonnay, and Sparkling Pointe Topaz Imperial.
