Chain announces closings of 43 restaurants

Better call ahead if you plan on visiting any restaurant owned by Bloomin’ Brands Inc. The company has announced it will close 43 underperforming restaurants but doesn't have a track record of publicly revealing specific location closings ahead of time.

Bloomin' Brands is the parent of 1,500 restaurants operating under the brands Outback Steakhouse, Bonefish Grill, Carrabba's Italian Grill -- all of which have or had Capital Region venues -- and Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, which has locations only in California, Arizona and Alabama.

The Bonefish Grill in Colonie abruptly closed earlier this month without public notice. Although that particular location seemed to be popular, nationally the same-store sales of that brand fell nearly 2% from 2015 to 2016. Same-store sales at the company's flagship Outback Steakhouse chain in the same period fell 4.8%, and 2.3% at its Carrabba’s restaurants.

In the Capital Region, Bloomin' Brands still has a Carrabba's at 675 Troy Schenectady Road in Latham, and Outback Steakhouses at 610 Old Route 146 in Clifton Park, 145 Wolf Road in Colonie, and 925 Route 9 in Queensbury.
