4 icons of American food to be featured on PBS presentation

Some of you younger folks may only know their names, if you know them at all. But, they were leaders in the American cooking and dining world and where we are now has a lot to do with what they did in their primes.

I'm speaking of four iconic foodies whose stories will be told on public TV's "American Masters" series in a four-piece, two-night arc called "Chefs Flight."

A look at James Beard (1903-1985), often referred to as "America's first foodie," will be paired up with a rerun of a Julia Child (1912-2004) documentary from 9 to 10 and 10 to 11 p.m. Friday, May 19. Then, a new documentary on Jacques P├ępin (b. 1935) will be paired with a rerun of a similar look at and Alice Waters (b. 1944) from 9 to 10 and 10 to 11 p.m. Friday, May 26.
