Day spa/French bistro coming to Crossgates Mall

The only symbiotic spa-and-restaurant operation I'm aware of in the Capital Region is the Rumors day spa and Tala Bistro in Latham. That will change this fall with a much more ambitious entry in the category.

Mirbeau Hospitality Services has announced plans to open a 17,000-square-foot day spa at Crossgates Mall in Guilderland that will include a "French bistro" -- your choice of how to define that -- plus fitness areas, a heated foot massage pool, and other creature comforts at what will be called Spa Mirbeau. It will be located in the area formerly home to Finish Line and Bally's Total Fitness.

"We created Spa Mirbeau to bring the Mirbeau Inn & Spa concept directly to our customers in the Capital Region, so they can enjoy the ultimate, yet classic, Spa Mirbeau experience close to home," said Linda Dower, a principal of Mirbeau Hospitality Services.

Dower is a graduate of Syracuse University. Mirbeau, a collection of ultra high-end venues, has a facility in nearby Skaneateles, one under development in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, and another in Plymouth, MA.

Mirbeau, which last year moved its headquarters to 433 Broadway in Saratoga Spring, is loosely translated as “reflected beauty,” and is the surname of Octave Mirbeau, a French art critic in the period dominated by the French impressionist painter Claude Monet. Mirbeau resorts are intended to give guests the feeling of being in Giverny, France, the home of the Monet's famous Giverny Garden that was the subject of many of his iconic paintings.
