State's latest local back-tax seizure ends at Hot Harry's

Well, that didn't last long. On Wednesday, the state Department of Taxation and Finance seized the Hot Harry's Fresh Burritos franchise in Schenectady and closed it for back taxes in excess of $17,000. Today, it reopened.

Earlier this month, the state seized Merry Monk restaurants in Albany and Saratoga Springs for nearly a half-million dollars in unpaid taxes. Eight days later, both reopened. In February, Café Nola in Schenectady was shuttered for nonpayment of $53,000 in taxes. It has not reopened.

The franchise owner of the Hot Harry's location at 1625 Union Street made a payment and worked out an agreement with the agency, according to reports. The small chain's headquarters -- seven locations -- in Massachusetts was involved in the negotiations with the state.

The only other Hot Harry's in the Capital Region, located in East Greenbush, was not involved in the actions. It is run by a different franchise holder.
