North Fork debuts free shuttle bus service for visitors

Visitors to Long Island's winery-heavy North Fork who are concerned about mixing sampling and driving now have something more than a tour bus as a transportation alternative.

The North Fork Link, a new six-bus shuttle operation, opened for business today. The free service moves riders between Riverhead and Greenport every Saturday through August 25 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The service offers arrivals every 30 minutes, and offers an app to check schedules in real time.

In addition to making stops at wineries, the shuttle also picks up and discharges riders at selected venues for such indulgences as strawberry picking, tastings of crudité, chocolates, and oysters, and vodka sampling. And, stops at shopping areas, beaches, and other spots are included on the 30-stop schedule.

Duncan Kennedy, president of the North Fork Promotion Council, noted that the service may provide some relief from the heavy auto traffic that is typical in the area. In addition, he said, the shuttle will make stops at Long Island Rail Road stations in Riverhead, Mattituck, and Greenport and travel along both County Road 48 and New York State Route 25, operating in a continual loop.
