'Great Wall of Stewarts' slowly rising in Troy

TROY -- What some local residents have dubbed "The Great Wall of Stewart's" is a major construction project that certainly has been drawing a of attention in recent months.

As the Stewarts Shops chain has been reworking its location at Hoosick and 10th Street a block east of the Collar City Bridge to replace the old store with a new, much more attractive one, what keeps catching the eye the most is the steep embankment behind the shop.

That's where a new cement block retaining wall collapsed in May after a rain, sending blocks tumbling down behind the original store and giving at least the appearance of endangering the Sonic Drive-In that is perched atop that embankment in a corner of the Hudson River Commons shopping complex.

Since then, the original Stewarts store has been razed, the new one constructed and open for business, but they still are fiddling with a retaining wall. Quite an attention-getter on the busy thoroughfare, but it appears completion  is near.
