Tara Kitchen, a popular Moroccan restaurant in Schenectady, plans to open a Troy location.
Owner Aneesa Waheed made the announcement today with Troy city officials. The restaurant will be located at 172 River Street which once was home to Nelick's Furniture Store and, since 2014, has been home to the River Street Lofts apartments. A spring debut is projected.
Waheed is familiar with downtown Troy from her time as a student at Russell Sage College.
“Troy has sort of been in my vision for a long period of time,” she said. “It just kept popping up over and over again. We have a huge customer base there.”
Waheed, who lives in Niskayuna with her husband and two children, moved to the Schenectady area from India in 1993. She founded Tara Kitchen in 2012 on Schenectady's Jay Street. She relocated it after the major fire last year that devastated the area, and now operates nearby at 431 Liberty Street.
Waheed, incidentally, has a blog component on her Tara Kitchen website that offers a lineup of cooking demonstrations for some of her most popular dishes.
